On Saturday, May 9th, 2020, Crisis Support Services of Alameda County (CSS) will present our 10th annual community event—Healing Hearts 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention. Located near Downtown Oakland, on Lake Merritt, our annual suicide prevention walk/run event offers a superb opportunity for the community to support mental health awareness, community wellness, and the lifesaving work of CSS.
Registration begins at 9:00 am and the runners and walkers start at 10:00 am on a beautiful course that starts and finishes at the Lakeside Bandshell (The Edoff Memorial Bandshell) and circles Lake Merritt. This family-friendly event also features a health and wellness fair with local health care providers, businesses, and nonprofit agencies. Crisis Support Services of Alameda County has provided free 24-hour crisis intervention and suicide prevention services in the County since 1966 serving over 50,000 clients a year. in addition to the 24-hour crisis line, CSS also provides a crisis text line, support groups, counseling services for older adults and seniors, school-based counseling, grief counseling, and community education.
The 5K walk/run event strives to raise awareness of our agency’s free support services for children, youth, individuals, and families dealing with depression, mental illness, and suicide. In the past ten years, we have seen this event take shape as a place for families and friends who are grieving to come together and heal as a community.
Immediately following the Healing Hearts 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention, A Beautiful Day Foundation presents its marvelous Teen Rock BandShowcase, where up to six bands of terrific youth musicians compete to see who will win a recording studio session and college scholarships from the Foundation. The performances are judged by a panel of music professionals. A Brighter Day Foundation raises awareness about youth depression, stress, isolation and feelings of hopelessness.
